July Update

July is almost over. Summer is half over.

Time flies in a pandemic.

Or does it?

This continues to be an unsettling time for many.

My own new normal continues to shift under my feet. One minute I think I’ve got a foot on solid ground, the next, not so much.

When I’m feeling more optimistic, I think there couldn’t have been a better time for this to have happened. There was never going to be a good time, let’s be honest, but at least it happened at a time when I was used to change being the rule instead of the exception.

I mean, kids, amirite? They have a way of keeping you on your toes, whether you’re too tired to stand or not. Anyone with babies and toddlers knows once you get used to a routine, it must be time for a change.

As my kids have grown, things have calmed down a bit.

Thus, when I’m not feeling so good about the world I find myself really yearning for that schedule of events and activities that would develop naturally over time as the kids get back to school. That won’t be happening this year, because it’s not safe.

No pictures of embarrassed kids next to overjoyed parents on the first day of school this year. Imagine what those pictures will look like now – mom in a bathrobe, with a bottle of wine for breakfast, and the kids still in their pajamas. Sounds about right. If they’re even out of bed.

I’m joking. Mostly. I will put in an effort to embrace any sort of schedule that might spontaneously erupt from the chaos but continue to roll with the changes as they get hurled at me.

In other news, I continue to write (I’m about halfway through a Dragoneer sequel!) and prepare for a virtual book launch this September. I’m not sure how it’s all going to work, but it will all come together in the end.

I wish you all peace for the rest of the summer as we enter new phases and deal with more changes.

  1. Yay about continuing the slog that is writing! It seems like a hard habit to keep, especially with everything that’s been going on. Wishing you all the best as well, Amber!
